What accreditation does—and does not—mean
UNFCCC participation has formal eligibility, nomination and confirmation procedures. An NGO should never assume that a previous conference badge, an event invitation or an informal partnership gives it COP31 access. The official registration process is the only authority for eligibility and confirmation.
Even with access, a team still needs a clear purpose. The most useful preparation connects specific policy questions, allies, meetings and evidence to the organisation’s mandate.
Four questions before committing resources
What is our objective?
Define the policy, partnership, accountability or learning result you need—not merely attendance.
Which space matters?
Formal process, civil-society coordination, partner meetings and public events serve different objectives.
Who needs to be there?
Choose delegates for policy knowledge, relationship-building and follow-up capacity, not only seniority.
What can we substantiate?
Bring claims, asks and examples that are specific, evidence-led and appropriate to the organisation’s role.
Practical preparation checklist
- Check the official NGO registration and nomination route immediately.
- Map priority sessions, networks and counterpart organisations.
- Write a one-page briefing: your issue, evidence, request and offer.
- Schedule key meetings before arrival; do not rely on chance encounters.
- Give each delegate a post-COP follow-up responsibility.
